About the Festival

The Surrey Hills Music Festival has always been the premier community music event in the area.  Starting quite a few years ago as a multi-arts festival, 2016 was it’s seventh year as a dedicated music festival – yet it is so much more than that!   Workshops, food, stalls, dance and community are some of the many elements that come together to create this inclusive, engaging festival which takes place right here in the heart of Surrey Hills.

Who we are

The SHMF is an initiative of the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and is run by a dedicated band of people with a strong interest in the local community. The festival has the generous support of the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre, headed up by Shima Ibuki and her team who give so much energy and resources to the festival, as well as a band of wonderful volunteers and sponsors.
There is a Festival Steering Committee which meets monthly across the year to plan the festival.  While we do tend to see the same faces on the steering committee every year, we are very welcoming of new people to come on board and give us a hand.
Please contact us if you are interested
The Committee employs a Festival director who creates the overall plan for the festival and co-ordinates the various aspects of the operation. The Festival Director for 2017 is Melissa Chipp.

The Surrey Hills Music Festival was established in 2010 and, after continuing for a further five very successful years we are now planning the seventh festival in 2016. The festival is the suburb’s standout annual community event and its only dedicated music festival embraced by locals and visitors to the area.

Our long-term vision is to build on the enormous community engagement, creative talent, passion and support that has grown year by year, so that we can continue to enhance the well-being and resilience of our community through the medium of music and creative arts. We aim to do this by creating a festival that engages across cultural and demographic barriers, bringing in performers and audience from across Surrey Hills and the broader area.

The Surrey Hills Music Festival aims to:

  • Showcase the music and creativity from within and around the local area.
  • Present a unifying music program and associated entertainment – across all ages and cultures - that will attract a broad range of residents from Boroondara and surrounding suburbs.
  • Encourage families to participate and attend the event by creating a program to attract a range of age groups.
  • Esxpose the local community to a wide range of music genres practiced and loved within our community from classical, folk, bluegrass, rock, pop and indie to jazz
  • Promote cross-cultural understanding between groups within our community by encouraging the participation of a different communities as performers and audience members
  • Work more collaboratively with local and other businesses so the festival can publicly and valuably reward its sponsors and supporters.

This festival and can only occur with the support of a passionate and dedicated team of committee and volunteers; and support from local council, performers and business partners.

Our Team

The annual Surrey Hills Music Festival is managed by the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and guided by the Surrey Hills Music Festival Steering Committee. This committee consists of a group of local residents and friends who support this important local event through volunteering their time and expertise. We are extremely fortunate to have such a diverse and energetic group of people leading the Festival.

The Festival is also supported by a large group of volunteers who really make it all happen in the lead up, during and after the event. Community festivals such as ours would not be possible without the generosity of these individuals, and their willingness to contribute time and energy.  We view these individuals as vital Music Festival partners.
