Volunteering at Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre
Volunteering Victoria states that:
“Communities are strengthened by enabling and encouraging the widespread participation of its citizens. People’s sense of belonging and worth grow when they are given plenty of choices and chances to make a difference to the health and vitality of their communities.”
At the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre we value and appreciate the contribution that volunteers make to their community. It is the range and breadth of skills and experience contributed by volunteers that assists to make the Neighbourhood Centre a warm and welcoming community hub. We are very fortunate to have many volunteers assist in the running of this vibrant centre.
Volunteers assist with a range of tasks from keeping fit, delivering the Neighbourhood News to the local area on a bi-monthly basis, joining in the preparation of the weekly Community Roast Lunch for seniors, to running groups and programs for a broad range of interests such as scrabble and book clubs, discussion and cooking groups, laughter club and walking groups. All with the intention of offering companionship and a place to come together with like-minded people who value being part of their local community. Newcomers are always welcome.
Perhaps you have a particular skill you would like to share with others? You may be interested in assisting running a program, or you may like to join one of the volunteer activities already established such as the Heritage Project, the Music Festival, or, assist with extending friendship and hospitality? Some volunteers support the administrative functions of the centre by assisting in the office with photocopying, the display of information and meeting and greeting those who come in to enquire and book into classes and activities. Staff and volunteers work happily as a team. Throughout the year volunteers come together for an appreciation lunch or evening hosted by staff. These occasions provide a valuable opportunity for volunteers involved in the various aspects of the community to meet and share some social time together.
If you would like to enquire about volunteering at SHNC please have a look at our Volunteer Opportunities page, or ring and speak to our staff who will register your interest. The Manager will then contact you and arrange a convenient time to meet with you to discuss how you can become involved in your local Neighbourhood Centre.
